5 Ways to Celebrate Women's Equality Day this August

August 12, 2019 | Sophie Grufferty

August 26th 2019 marks nearly 100 years since women were granted the right to vote. Here, we share a few of the many ways to celebrate.

99 years ago on August 26th 1920, the United States passed the 19th amendment which granted women the rights to vote. Despite being 28 words long the bill was momentous and ended almost a century of protest:

The right of citizens of the United States to vote shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or by any State on account of sex.

Universal suffrage for all women didn’t pass in Britain until 1928 — eight years after it was achieved in the U.S — but for all the ways the movements differed, the work defied boundaries across the world.

Women's Equality Day takes place annually on August 26th to honour the anniversary of the historic day. It's an opportunity to not only celebrate our wins, but to remember those who have helped us along the way.

Here are five ideas to give kudos to the wonderful women in your life, and encourage allies to continue to support the fight for equality:

1. Support local businesses owned by women

Whether shopping in your city or online, you can make a point of buying from women-owned businesses in your area. There are several online directories you can use to pinpoint the shops worth a visit, including WomenOwned.com

2. Organize a meetup for those who share your goals and aspirations

Why not use the day to unite your closest allies (of all genders) to celebrate your wins, create conversations and discuss how to achieve further greatness? Brainstorm some ideas around a coffee, or plan a dinner to share experiences, tips, advice and networking opportunities.

3. Get your company on board

Simple actions like sharing articles or resources on your company Slack channel can be impactful. Open up a dialogue with your team and ask what they feel would be valuable to them personally – often the most difficult part is starting the conversation.

4. Find a mentee

Becoming a mentor could be invaluable to so many women in tech. Dedicating only one to two hours a week to a mentee is not only rewarding but could make a huge difference to somebody in the sector. To find out more about becoming a mentor and making the most out of the relationship, read our guide by European Women in Tech speaker Nilofer Christensen

5. Use social media to talk about an issue that matters to you

Whether it's the gender pay gap, the lack of women in positions of power, or work-life balance – social media is your platform and can facilitate connections with other like-minded women. Speak up, shout out and join the conversation – empowerment is the word of the day!

Equality is at the core of #WinTechSeries and we're proud to support its growth in all sectors across the globe. To celebrate Women's Equality Day on 26th August 2019, we’re giving away two tickets every week of August to attend a #WinTechSeries event of your choice!
